The biggest issue most golfers have with chipping is inconsistency. They change clubs, swing speed, and setup from shot to shot. This drill removes those variables and trains predictable results.
Start by choosing one club, ideally a pitching wedge or 9-iron. Using one club allows you to focus on clean contact and consistent rollout instead of constantly adjusting technique.
Next, pick a specific landing spot on the green rather than aiming at the hole. This spot should be just onto the putting surface where the ball can land and roll out naturally. The goal is to make the ball land on that spot every time.
Now place five to ten golf balls in the same location just off the green. Use the same setup for every shot. Ball slightly back of center, weight favoring your lead foot, narrow stance, and hands slightly ahead.
Make the same smooth chipping motion for each ball, allowing your shoulders and arms to move together. Do not try to guide the club or slow it down. Let the swing length control distance.
After each shot, observe where the ball lands and how it rolls. The focus is not on making the shot, but on consistency. When you can repeatedly land the ball near the same spot, your ability to get up and down improves quickly.
To increase difficulty, move the balls slightly farther away while keeping the same landing spot. This forces you to adjust swing length while maintaining tempo and technique.
This drill works because it simplifies chipping and builds trust. You learn how your club reacts and how the ball rolls on the green. That confidence transfers directly to the course.
When chipping becomes predictable, missed greens turn into easy pars instead of bogeys. One focused drill, practiced regularly, can lower your scores faster than almost anything else in golf.
