The first key is club selection. Most golfers automatically grab a high-lofted wedge, but that adds unnecessary risk. When there is plenty of green between you and the hole, using less loft produces far more consistent results. A pitching wedge, 9-iron, or even an 8-iron keeps the ball lower and rolling like a putt.
Next is setup. Play the ball slightly back of center in your stance, not off your back foot, but clearly behind middle. Lean your hands slightly toward the target and favor a bit more weight on your lead foot. This setup reduces excess loft and promotes clean contact.
Your stance should be narrow and stable, with your feet close together. Keep your body quiet and let your shoulders control the motion. The chip shot is not a wristy flick. It’s a small, controlled swing where the arms and shoulders move together.
Distance control comes from swing length, not speed. Keep your tempo the same and adjust how far the club swings back and through. A shorter swing creates less rollout. A longer swing creates more rollout. Trying to hit softer or harder introduces inconsistency.
Another critical factor is choosing a landing spot. Instead of aiming at the hole, pick a spot on the green where you want the ball to land. Let the ball land there and roll out naturally. This takes guesswork out of chipping and makes distance control far easier.
Finally, practice with intention. Use one club and chip multiple balls to the same landing spot. Focus on clean contact and consistent rollout rather than trying to make every shot.
When you simplify club selection, setup, and landing spot control, chipping becomes predictable. Predictable chips lead to tap-in putts, lower scores, and much more confidence around the green.
